Mackenzie’s Music Therapy Journey

Mackenzie Costron. Accredited Music Therapist. Registered Counselling Therapist. Kingston, Ontario. Halifax, Nova Scotia. Find Your Voice Music Therapy.

Music has always been a huge part of my life.  I started my music journey when I was young taking piano lessons, private voice lessons and singing in choirs.  In high school, I was actively involved with the symphonic and jazz bands playing alto saxophone and also began taking guitar lessons around this time.

Singing is what pulled at my heart!  For me there was nothing more exhilarating then connecting with myself or a group of people through singing.  Feeling this collective energy and the emotional changes within the music was a powerful experience for me.  Just like many of us, I knew in these moments of unity that music was a meaningful aspect of our communal and individual identity.

Through enrolling in Acadia University’s Music Therapy program I learned more about how the connection of music can impact medical, clinical, and therapeutic health and wellness.  I was inspired by this through having a caregiver, healer nature from a young age.  It excited me that Accredited Music Therapists could use music’s accessibility to impact people’s lives with no limitations of background, age, or status.

After my training I launched a music therapy practice in Kingston, Ontario.  I went down this path as I knew there wasn’t an Accredited Music Therapist in my hometown.  My aims were to provide meaningful services to my community with clinical and therapeutic impact.  In June 2017 Find Your Voice Music Therapy expanded to another location in Halifax, Nova Scotia- returning my 2nd home where my music therapy training began. It’s truly a gift to have the opportunity to connect with both these communities!

Today I am certified both as an Accredited Music Therapist and Registered Counselling Therapist.  In my practice I use the interplay of both verbal language and music within the therapeutic process.  I am passionate about shining light on my client’s stories, while they serve as an expert of knowledge with their own life.  I am also passionate about creating safe spaces that are inclusive and equitable to all our clients in our communities.

Find Your Voice Music Therapy is now a team of 4 with the addition of support staff.  I am blessed to be able to surround myself with such vibrant, accomplished and caring team!  Wishing many more years ahead of connection, healing and growth!
