What are you passionate about in music therapy?
Music therapy is a way to connect with others on a different level and through a means that can join us all together. When I think of music, I think of music worldwide and how it can evoke so many different emotions and sensations. I love that music therapy offers another way of communicating and working through our reasons for seeking music therapy in the first place.
Why did you want to join the Katarokwi/Kingston, ON Find Your Voice Music Therapy team?
I have worked as a sole music therapist running her mobile practice and have wanted to work in a team setting for a while. This position offered an opportunity to collaborate with other music therapists in a team environment that is supportive and forward-thinking. That aspect appealed to me and seemed like a perfect fit for the work environment I was hoping to be a part of moving forward.
What do you hope to accomplish through your music therapy work in YGK?
Through my music therapy work, I hope to bring more support to the community and those working through these challenging times. I want to provide services that can help work through challenges and bring new joy to the clients’ lives. I love working with diverse populations, and I hope to provide this support through a broader spectrum of the communities in the YGK.
Alexa Munroe Choquette, BMus, CMT, Music Therapist (she/her/hers), developed a love for music at a young age and continuously looked for ways to incorporate it into her future career. She completed a Bachelors of Music in voice performance at Dalhousie University. Alexa then went on to get her Certificate of Music Therapy from Acadia University, where she studied piano, guitar, percussion, and voice.
During her internship, Alexa developed her approach to music therapies and developed many different skills. She has experience working with hospitalized children, at-risk youth, children and adults with developmental disabilities, and Seniors. Part of her approach is to develop a safe and welcoming environment where everyone can feel comfortable engaging in sessions.
In addition to her performance and music therapy, Alexa is currently enrolled in a Masters of Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. At the end of this degree, she plans to join the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) as a Registered Psychotherapist (RP). This will allow her to provide deeper exploration and broader services to the community.
