Sonja Moller BMT, MTA, MT-BC, (she/her) is a passionate music therapist who is excited and passionate about working with and developing relationships with her clients. Sonja has had a vast array of experiences, including work with young children, teens, older adults, seniors, and those in palliative care. Sonja also has a strong background in performance, starting with violin at age six through to university, as well as vocal performance, dramatic arts, and dance. Sonja’s main instruments include violin, guitar, and piano. Her experience in performance has enabled her to develop deep musicianship which she applies in her music therapy practice by bringing in client-preferred music, and implementing improvisational experiences. This upbringing in performance also impacts her practice in that she follows a music-centred approach; she believes that all people are able to enjoy, participate in, and benefit from therapeutic musical experiences.
In addition to being music-centred, Sonja truly enjoys forming relationships with people, and understands that this formation is essential to a person’s progress in therapy. She values each person as an individual, and works to emphasize their strengths within the therapeutic space. Sonja also is mindful of potential power imbalances when working with people of differing and special needs, and therefor works to remove any kind of hierarchical client-therapist relationship. Sonja sincerely looks forward to working with you in a musical setting, and to help you reach your goals, whether these be rooted in health, music, or simply pure enjoyment. Sonja is also the facilitator of Rise Again Tutoring supporting students and interns writing the CBMT Exam to become Certified Music Therapists.
