Music Therapist Process

Referrals can be received from healthcare or educational professionals, family members, caregivers, or from individuals who self-refer for music therapy services.

An initial assessment will be conducted by studying the individual’s available medical records and documentation from other healthcare professionals.  The music therapist will also interview and observe the individual’s response to music therapy techniques in a group and/or individual setting.

Treatment Plan

From the assessment individual-specific goals will be formulated and a series of objectives are created to achieve the goals stated.  Goal areas could include physical, emotional, cognitive, social, or spiritual areas of health and wellness.

Music therapy sessions take place in either a group or individual context.  Active and receptive intervention techniques are used according to the needs and preferences of the individual. Music therapy techniques include:
  • Listening to Music
  • Singing
  • Playing Instruments
  • Recording Music
  • Composing & Songwriting
  • Improvising
  • Lyrics Analysis
  • Performing Music
  • Legacy Work
  • Movement and Dancing
  • Musical Discussion and Reminiscence
  • Relaxation and Imagery

Continuous evaluation will take place to determine whether the individual is responding to the methods of treatment when considering the goals defined in the treatment plan.  The treatment plan will be modified accordingly to achieve clinical and therapeutic progress.
