We are excited to welcome Elizabeth Heslinga to the Find Your Voice Music Therapy: Katarokwi/ Kingston, ON team! We invite you to read further to learn more about what she brings to our clinical team.
What are you passionate about in music therapy?
Elizabeth loves seeing people come to life when engaging in music. She strives to connect with those who are hard to reach through the power of music, and shares in her client’s joy when a smile comes to their face. Having shared her gift of music with her great grandmother, Elizabeth treasures those memories and has a special passion for working with the elderly. As a music therapist Elizabeth loves making a positive impact on people’s lives while sharing in music together.
Why did you want to join the Katarokwi/ Kingston, ON Find Your Voice Music Therapy team?
Elizabeth has a desire to connect with people through music. At times, being a successful small business owner can be lonely. Joining Find Your Voice Music Therapy team allows her to do what she became a music therapist to do, and be part of a team to encourage one another, to share her successes and struggles.
What do you hope to accomplish through your music therapy work in the YGK area?
Ultimately Elizabeth hopes to improve the quality of life of as many people as possible. To achieve that, she anticipates that by joining this team and increasing the number of music therapists, music therapy may be able to be made more accessible to a greater number of facilities, groups and individuals.
Elizabeth Heslinga began playing the flute in grade 5 and was honoured to have played with a youth orchestra as well as the National Concert Band. She experienced the power of music while playing for her cousin with a brain injury, and decided to pursue a career in music therapy. Elizabeth graduated at the top of her class with a degree in Music Therapy from Acadia University. Following her internship with Music Therapy Services of Simcoe County, Elizabeth established Beyond Words music therapy. She pioneered the field of music therapy in her community of Trenthills and the Quinte area, establishing more than a full caseload within a few short years. Elizabeth has a heart for working with the elderly and 9 years’ experience working in long term care establishments. Working with adults and children with special needs has also been very successful for her. Elizabeth trained as an internship supervisor, and has supported one music therapist in their accreditation. Elizabeth reduced her workload to raise and nurture her 3 children in their early years, and is excited to continue her passion for helping others through the use of music.
