We’re excited to introduce Abby Rhynold, BMT (she/her)—our current intern at Find Your Voice Music Therapy. A music therapy intern is a student in the final stage of their training, gaining hands-on experience by working with clients under the supervision of a certified music therapist. We love working with interns as they bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and dedication as they develop their professional skills. Abby brings a warm presence, a deep love of music, and a passion for making therapy accessible to all. Meet Abby!
Abby’s Journey To Becoming a Music Therapist
Abby was born and raised in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia (Mi’kma’ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq nation). From a young age, music was a constant in her life, and she has carried that love into both her personal and professional worlds.
She completed her Bachelor of Music Therapy at Acadia University, where she studied guitar, euphonium, voice, and piano. During her time there, she gained hands-on clinical experience with a variety of populations including seniors in long-term care, adults living with developmental delays, and adults working through addictions. These experiences deepened her belief in the healing power of music and her conviction that every individual is inherently musical.
Abby’s Passion for Music Therapy
Abby says, “The most exciting thing about music therapy, for me, is that I get to continue to work on my musical skill-building in ways that are constantly changing from client to client. Each client brings new challenges and opportunities to think creatively. Aside from the dream of having a career in music, I also discovered a strong interest in psychology during my time at Acadia. I enjoy learning about the inner workings of the brain and thinking about them from a musical and therapeutic perspective. I love that we, as music therapists, are offering unique solutions to age-old questions.”
Why Abby Chose FYVMT For Her Internship
When it came time to choose her internship placement, Abby was drawn to Find Your Voice Music Therapy because of the supportive, community-centered environment she sensed within the team. “What initially drew me to the Find Your Voice Music Therapy team was the tight-knit, supportive community they seemed to have as therapists, which has proven to be true as I’ve gotten to know them all better. Once I did a little more research, I realized how committed they were to accessibility for both their therapists and their clients, and this is something I value deeply.”
Accessible Music Therapy is Abby’s Career Goal
Abby is eager to keep learning and growing during her internship while working toward a future where music therapy is financially and geographically accessible to all Nova Scotians. “My biggest hope is to gain confidence as a therapist and learn as much as I possibly can. In the future, I want to work toward making music therapy accessible for any Nova Scotian that wishes to participate. Financially accessible therapy is extremely important to me. Lastly, I hope to find ways to keep the music therapy profession/community alive and thriving in my home province!”
